Build a Coal Mine in Dudley The Real History: In most parts of Britain, miners had to dig deep, dangerous shafts to find coal seams only a few feet thick. In Dudley, the coal seam was an astonishing 30 feet (10 meters) thick and sat so close to the surface that it could often be quarried like stone right out of the open ground.
